Our Curriculum Vision
At Samlesbury, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian Values and vision with the aim to provide a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child can flourish and let their light shine. We aim to develop the whole child - academically, socially, morally and spiritually as we nurture every child's God-given talents and character so they can flourish and make a positive difference in the world around them. Our hope for every child and adult within our school is to
Let your light shine as we live as a light to others; live to do good and live to love God.
Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced and ambitious for all pupils. Rooted in our Christian ethos, we aim to:
- inspire each child to 'let their light shine' by discovering their unique strengths and interests;
- deliver the full National Curriculum - ensuring no subject is narrowed or missed;
- foster a love of learning through creativity, challenge and curiosity;
- support every pupil, including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds, to reach their potential;
- promote character development, well-being and spiritual growth.
Curriculum Implementation
- We follow the National Curriculum, enriched with wider experiences such as trips, 'wow' days and special visitors.
- Each subject is carefully planned with clear progression and coherence.
- Christian Values and our school vision are woven into all subjects and experiences.
- Teachers use a variety of approaches to meet the needs of all learners, supported by CPD and school leaders.
- Subject leaders ensure consistency, quality and high expectations across the school.
Curriculum Impact
We measure the impact of our curriculum by:
- assessing how well children retain knowledge, skills and understanding over time;
- observing how they apply learning in creative, thoughtful and meaningful ways;
- gathering pupil voice to understand their enjoyment and engagement;
- monitoring outcomes to ensure progress for all, including vulnerable groups.
Above all, we aim to develop children who are confident, compassionate and equipped to shine their light in the world.
Curriculum Overviews
Here at Samlesbury, we have a broad and balanced curriculum which covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Each class from Y1-Y6 has a two year rolling program of topics for the foundation subjects, with Reception following a different curriculum. In this section you can find the overviews for your child’s class which are a useful tool to help you to support your child further in their learning at home if you would like to.
Curriculum Overview
Core Expectations
The core expectations cover they key skills/knowledge which your child will cover for each year group in Maths and English. If your child is secure in the learning for their academic year then they will widen their knowledge and understanding within the learning in that year group. In exceptional circumstances we will begin to cover the next year group’s objectives. Sometimes a child will need additional time to become secure in these core expectations, so as part of the usual differentiation which takes place in the classroom, the objectives from the year below may be revisited.
