Modern Foreign Languages at Samlesbury CE Primary School

At Samlesbury CE Primary School, we aim to deliver a fun, exciting and challenging foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels programme. All children in Key Stage 2 take part in weekly language lessons designed to build skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Our goal is to help pupils develop a love of languages, curiosity about the world, and confidence in using a foreign language. We teach grammar in a fun and age-appropriate way, helping children build strong foundations for future learning. Lessons are carefully planned and tailored to suit each year group, gradually increasing in challenge from simple words and phrases to full sentences and conversations.

Children start in Year 3 with basic vocabulary and grammar in Early Language units, then progress to more complex structures in Intermediate and Progressive units. Each unit includes engaging activities, such as songs, games, reading and writing tasks, and interactive whiteboard resources. Teachers ensure all pupils are supported and stretched appropriately.

Languages are taught through exciting topics and often linked to other areas of learning. Cultural experiences such as cooking, traditional dress, festivals, and language assemblies help children learn about the wider world and celebrate diversity.

We regularly check how well children are learning and provide feedback to support their progress. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own learning and are given vocabulary sheets and progress trackers to help them build confidence.

The curriculum is taught separately in year 3 and year 4 so that the key foundations of French language can be acquired before moving onto year 5/6 where there is a two year rolling program of learning. Within this, learning is structured to support all learners with adaptive teaching utilised.

By the end of Key Stage 2, children will be able to understand, speak, read, and write in the language they are learning, preparing them well for secondary school and beyond.
