The children were visited by three local Magistrates, who came to guide the children through our criminal justice system and what happens in a court room. They gave a presentation about the work of a Magistrate - the children were shocked that Magistrates do not get paid for their service. This led to the whole class taking part in a scripted mock trial, during which the magistrates acted as the defense and prosecution and the children had to decide the verdict of guilty or not guilty. Despite the best efforts of the defense, the children found the criminal guilty.
This was an excellent experience for the children to learn about our justice system in an age appropriate manner and to get them thinking about whether they may be interested in a career in law when they are older.
